In what ways would you foster connection(s) between domestic and international students at Vic?
Thank you for your question. In my view, one of the most significant distinctions between domestic and international students is the distance from home. While domestic students often have the privilege of being close to their families and can see them regularly after classes or on weekends, international students face unique challenges. Many of them find it difficult to return home due to the time and financial constraints involved. Consequently, international students tend to spend more time on campus than their domestic counterparts.
Recognizing this difference, my focus as the International Councillor is twofold:
1. Frequent Small-Scale Events: I aim to organize small-scale events regularly among students (mainly focus on international students) to foster connections and support networks. These events will provide opportunities for international students to bond and help one another in navigating their academic and personal journeys. Notice that domestic students are also welcomed if they want to participate in these events, I want every activity is open to all vickies.
2. Showcasing Unique Perspectives: Additionally, I plan to host several major events that highlight the unique perspectives of international students. These events will serve as a platform for international students to share their experiences and insights with the domestic student community. Conversely, domestic students will also have the chance to share their own stories and help international students gain a deeper understanding of Toronto and Canadian culture. Through these events, friendships will be forged, and mutual support networks will develop, benefiting both groups in their studies and daily lives.
For specific details about the activities, I intend to organize, please refer to my response to Shane's questions. In summary, I intend to host an international culture festival that includes exhibitions showcasing food, cultural history, and language. Furthermore, a talent show will be a regular feature, providing a stage for Vickies to express themselves. I also plan to continue hosting beloved events like the Lunar New Year Celebration and Bubble Tea Chatting to ensure that everyone remains connected and engaged.
I trust that this response addresses your inquiry. If you have any further questions or suggestions, please feel free to reach out.
